Where to go for Help / Advice

You will get the best advice by talking to current students as well as faculty and staff affiliated with the MST Program. UCSD MST Program affords a great deal of flexibility and can be tailored on an individual basis; however, this has the potential to give a lack of focus and direction. Here is a list of advising resources at your disposal to help prevent this problem:

  • Other M.D./Ph.D. students: The best advice regarding the program, choosing a lab or life in San Diego will come from fellow M.D./Ph.D. students. Every incoming student will be matched with a second year 'big sib'. Your 'big sib' can give you the most current advice of how to study and what to expect during the pre-clinical years in medical school. A list of current students is included in this handbook. All current contact information of all the students is accessible at the MSTP office. Feel free to talk to students at all stages of their training.
  • Director and Associate Director: Dr. Insel and Dr. Glass are accessible to students at any time.
  • MSTP Steering and Advising Committee: List with names and contacts is in the back of this handbook.
  • UCSD Faculty with M.D./Ph.D. degrees: Partial list with names and contacts is in the back of this handbook and will be updated during the year.
  • Program Administrative Assistant: Christine Moran is always available to talk to. Go to her office or call her at x40689 or contact her through email at clmoran@ucsd.edu.
  • The staff of the Office of Student Affairs: is always available to help you through every part of the Medical School. Dr. Maria Savoia, Associate Dean for Curriculum and Student Affairs can be reached by phone at 534-3703 or by email at msavoia@ucsd.edu. Deborah Anderson, the Director of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) can be reached by phone at 534-1394 or by email at dkanderson@ucsd.edu. Joyce Felder, Registrar in the Office of Student Affairs can be reached by phone at 534-1393 or by email at jfelder@ucsd.edu. Susan Groh, Assistant Director of the OSA, can be reached by phone at 822-2014 or by email at sgroh@ucsd.edu.
