Admission Information
The Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of California, San Diego is designed to provide research training to highly qualified students for whom clinical exposure and strong research experiences provide motivation for a career in academic medicine. In keeping with the extensive variety and collaborative nature of research in the La Jolla biomedical community, the MSTP is particularly noteworthy for the depth of scientific opportunities available to its students and for its flexibility.
Diversity
The UCSD MSTP, a federally funded program, actively seeks women and underrepresented students and is committed to enrollment of a diverse body of talented students. Out-of-state residents are considered on an equal basis with other applicants. Applicants should have previous experience in both the research and clinical aspects of science and medicine. Trainees must be US citizens, or have permanent, legal residence in the United States.
Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
To help achieve our goal of diversity, the MSTP has created the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, which began in the summer of 2001. SURF is targeted to undergraduates from underrepresented minority groups. This is an opportunity to experience clinical and laboratory research and to participate in community, cultural, and health education outreach for eight weeks during the summer.
