Community Involvement

As part of its commitment to educate a diverse body of health care professionals, the Medical School supports the CHUM and HCOE programs to interest under-represented students in a medical career and to assist these students in developing qualities important for academic success. The Consortium of Communities, High Schools, Universities and the Medical School (C.H.U.M.) is a collaboration between the San Diego Unified School District, UCSD, and the UCSD Medical School designed to increase junior and senior high school student interest and participation in science. Its efforts, targeted at six inner-city schools, include university visits, after school and weekend science fair workshops at the school sites, PSAT/SAT training, the Winter Break Science Fair Mini-Camp at UCSD, teacher training, equipment sharing, lectures and curriculum modeling, and several summer experiences.

The University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine Hispanic Center of Excellence supports the development of scientific knowledge and research skills of Hispanic students so that they may successfully complete their course of study and thereby increase the number of Hispanic health professionals serving our communities and the number of Hispanic faculty in health professions schools. This program works with selected students at all stages of their academic development, from elementary school through the completion of medical school.
