Doctor 4 A Day
The Doctor-4-A-Day Program is held once a year by the students at the UCSD School of Medicine.  This program is organized by the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and provides motivational and career guidance to students in middle and high schools in our inner cities.  Large and small group workshops are held on topics such as: how to become a doctor; behind the scenes in a medical school; prerequisites and undergraduate school requirements, and hands-on clinical experiences with blood pressures, triage, diagnoses, and doctor/patient relationships. UCSD's School of Medicine and the Hispanic Center of Excellence provides support for this program.

BioCom Nobel Laureate Dinner
BIOCOM/san diego is the regional association for the life science industries in the San Diego area, and is actively engaged in ensuring that the life sciences industry remains a strong and growing part of the region's economy.  They co-host the Nobel Laureate Dinner with the Office of the Swedish Consulate, which celebrates the scientific achievement of our region by honoring local laureates.

Young people and their teachers represent the keys to future scientific advances.  BIOCOM wants to encourage local youth to aspire to a career in science.  They provide an opportunity for local students and teachers to interact on a personal level with the Nobel laureates, prominent scientists, and over 300 scientific and business leaders associated with the biotech community.  The dinner event also recognizes the outstanding efforts of the education community in San Diego and serves to inspire students to maintain an interest in science.

Students and their teachers were awarded this opportunity by submitting an essay explaining why they wanted to become a scientist.  Out of over 2000 essays submitted, 10 students were picked, with Sorayda Santos, Sweetwater High School, with her mentor, Carmela Arstill, UCSD~COPC, being among the honorees.
