Whether doing an internship or running experiments for science fair projects, our students have the opportunity to work in a "real" lab on campus here at UCSD.  Dr. Percy Russell, Emeritus Associate Dean of Student Outreach, accepts students during the year to work in his lab (HCOE).  Ms. Anita Williams is Dr. Russell's Research Associate and laboratory manager, and mentors the students with their research and projects in protein chemistry, enzymology, and genetics.

This hands-on lab experience is valuable in that the students not only gain training in, and an understanding of laboratory safety, state of the art equipment, scientific research, and experiment protocols, but students gain connections to UCSD.  When they graduate from high school, they are automatically eligible for the lab internships offered by the HCOE and other affiliate programs, such as EXPORT and CURE.  Dr. Russell and Ms. Williams also provide letters of recommendation for students' files when they apply to schools and/or other jobs.

Dr. Russell received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, and served as the Assistant Dean of UCSD's School of Medicine.  He is currently an Emeritus Professor of Biology, and has numerous publications on the structure-function relationships of enzymes.

For the past sixteen years, Ms.Williams has been the lab manager and Research Associate of the HCOE laboratory.  She also serves as mentor to Upward Bound Claremont, SDSU, and to outreach programs such as COPC, the School of Medicine's EXPORT, and the Cancer Center's CURE programs.
