Science Intersessions
Three intersessions, or "mini-camps", are held during the vacation breaks at the Sweetwater Union High School campus.
Students conduct "hands-on" labs that include gel electrophoresis, DNA fingerprinting, plant cloning/micro propagation, blood typing and spatter analysis,
and even astronomy. Students make a star chart of the constellations for a particular time of year and location. A "star party" is
then held at night with telescopes so the students and their families can find star clusters using charts made during the class.
The mini-camps enrich the students' experiences in science. Students conduct investigations and utilize skills not taught
in the regular academic curriculum in the classroom. Guest speakers and teachers use lectures and lab experiments to
demonstrate how learning in the classroom has real-life applications. Students are able to see how science is used in careers such as
forensics, medicine, and biotechnology.
