About EdCom

The Office of Educational Computing (EdCom) is a member of the School of Medicine's Division of Medical Education (MedEd).  As part of its central administration, EdCom provides Information Technology (IT) leadership, expertise, infrastructure, and services in support of the teaching, learning, and programmatic goals of the Division.  EdCom supports the Offices of the Vice Dean for Medical Education, Admission & Student Affairs, Undergraduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education, and Medical Alumni. EdCom is comprised of a number of interdisciplinary service-based teams including:

EdCom Technical Support

--manages the computing and communications infrastructure for MedEd, provides desktop support for MedEd faculty and staff, maintains student computing facilities offered by MedEd,  manages storage and delivery of IT-based instructional and administrative content and staffs a Tech Help Desk for basic diagnostic consulting  / problem solving.


EdCom Development and Programming

--offers expertise on technology-based instructional design, programming, multimedia, and database development.  It is subdivided into the following functional units:

  • Web Programming  & e-Systems - develops and maintain online resources for MedEd administrative offices and programs, SOM students, and core courses.
  • Curricular Resources - works closely with core course faculty and administrators to ensure that all IT-based resources are developed, updated, and delivered as needed for each curricular segment.
  • Special Projects - handles grant-funded endeavors, such as the DARPA-funded AnatomicVisualizeR system and the NIH-funded Natonal Tuberculosis Curriculum Consortium.

EdCom Services

-- provides support for the SOM, Medical Centers, and UCSD Campus.

  • AudioVisual Services - oversees the Health Sciences smart classrooms, conference rooms, and auditoria - on the SOM campus and at both the La Jolla and Hillcrest Medical Centers.
  • Room Scheduling - manages the allocation of Health Sciences teaching and conference space for more than 70 rooms on the SOM campus and at both the La Jolla and Hillcrest Medical Centers.
  • Test Analysis - offers computerized exam/survey processing and analysis for the SOM and the UCSD Campus.
