Virtual Reality — Overview

Virtual Reality (VR), once considered science fiction by most educators, is finally gaining serious consideration as an avenue for medical training. At the UCSD School of Medicine, an advanced research laboratory has been established within Educational Computing to experiment with VR-systems in combination with multimedia-based educational resources. We call our project Anatomic VisualizeR© and consider it to be a "Virtual Reality — Multimedia Synthesis (VR-MMS)".

Anatomic VisualizeR© provides a virtual dissecting room in which students and faculty can directly interact with 3D models (anatomic, schematic, etc.) and concurrently access supporting curricular materials (text, images, sound, video, etc.).

Developed at and supported by the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Additional support through grants from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Office of Naval Research and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine.
