MedEd Student Exchange: Instructions for Configuring Outlook Express 6 (IMAP)
I. Setting up Outlook Express
1. Open Outlook Express.
2. If you have not previously setup your Outlook Express with an email account, you will be assisted by the Internet Connection Wizard. If you have previously setup an email account with Outlook Express, proceed to Section II below.
The first step requests for you to enter your Display name, in this case your first and last name. Click on Next to continue.

3. Next, you will be asked to enter your Email Address, in this case you will enter your UCSD email address. Click on Next to continue.

4. In the E-mail Server Names window, you will be asked to select the type of incoming mail server and to enter the server name of the MedEd Student Exchange server address. Depending on which protocol you choose, enter the following settings for the incoming and outgoing mail servers.
Note: The POP3 protocol only allows for you to download your email but it will not syncronize any additional folders or contact lists you may create. Any folders created in the POP3 protocol will not appear on the MedEd Student Exchange WebOutlook. We recommend using the IMAP protocol, which allows for folder and contact synchronization with the MedEd Student Exchange server, this will allow them to be visible through the MedEd Student WebOutlook.
Incoming mail server: meded-stuexchan.AD.UCSD.EDU (case sensitive)
Outgoing mail server: smtp.ucsd.edu
- Click Next to continue

5. In the Internet Mail Logon window:
- In the Account name field, type in your UCSD username (truncated to 8-characters).
- In the Password field, type in your UCSD password and check the box next to Remember password.
- Click Next to continue.

6. Congratulations, you have completed the first half of the setup process. Now you'll need to configure the advanced features to properly communicate with the MedEd Student Exchange server. Click on Finish to continue.

IMAP users: If you receive a dialog box, indicating there are no folders to show, click NO in response to the "Would you like to view a list of available folders now?" question.

II. Setting up the Advance Settings
1. Click on the Tools in the menu bar, followed by clicking on Accounts.

2. Next, click on the Mail tab. Select the account for MedEd Student Exchange, followed by clicking on the Properties button.
3. Click on the Servers tab.



- Enter 465 in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field.
- Check the box beside, This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
- Enter 993 in the Incoming mail (IMAP) field.
- Check the box beside, This server requires a secured connection (SSL)
- Click on OK to continue

Security Certificate Warning
Now click on Send/Recv button, you may see a security warning about the authentication of the Security Certificate, press OK/Accept. The security certificate is valid, but not correctly interpreted by Outlook Express.
