MedEd Student Exchange: Instructions for Configuring Mac Mail (IMAP)
This document explains how to set up Mac Mail in Mac OS 10.4 or later for MedEd Student Exchange.Please note that Mac Mail does not support the full suite of services that Exchange provides such as Calendaring, Task Lists, Notes, etc. Only Microsoft Outlook and Entourage applications support these features.
Please note that if you currently use Mac Mail to access email from multiple accounts, these instructions do not apply to you. The instructions below are for those who are setting up Mac Mail for Exchange Email only.
I. Opening Mac Mail
1.) Launch Mac Mail by selecting the Mail icon from your dock or by going into the Applications folder and selecting the Mail icon..

II. Setting up a Mail Account
1.) The Welcome to Mail window will open and help you get started. Enter your Full Name, @ UCSD Email Address, and Password in the appropriate fields. Once completed, click Continue.

2.) The following window will ask for the Exchange Incoming Mail Server.
- In the Account Type drop down menu, select IMAP.
- In the Description field, type MedEd Exchange.
- In the Incoming Mail Server field, type meded-stuexchan.AD.UCSD.EDU (case sensitive).
- In the User Name field, type your Username (UCSD email name, the prefix of your @ucsd.edu email - truncated to eight charaters).
- In the Password field, type your Password.
- Click Continue.

3.) Next, a window for the Outgoing Mail Server will appear.
- In the Description field, enter the following UCSD SMTP.
- In the Outgoing Mail Server field, enter the following smtp.ucsd.edu.
- Check the Use only this server box.
- Leave the Use Authentication box unchecked.
- Click Continue.

4.) After entering the settings for the Incoming and Outgoing servers, an Account Summary window will appear for review. If you need to make any changes to the settings, click on the Go Back button. Make sure the check box Take account online is selected. After reviewing, click on the Create button to establish your account. Depending on your internet connection speed, this process could take a few minutes to complete while a connection with the servers is established and your account is verified.

5.) Once your account has been verified, your MedEd Student Exchange mailboxes will appear in the column on the left-hand side of your Mac Mail Inbox window. Click on the Get Mail button to begin downloading your email.

6.) Congratulations, you have now configured your Mac Mail for the MedEd Student Exchange server.
Accepting the Security Certificate
In some cases you may come across a dialog box mentioning Mail can't verify the identity of "meded-stuexchan.AD.UCSD.EDU" before being able to download or sent mail. The certificate is safe to trust, MacMail is simply unable to properly interpret our security certificate. Please follow the steps below to "Always Trust" the certificate.
1.) When the Verify Certificate dialogue box appears, click on the Show Certificate button.
2.) The dialogue box should expand, check the box beside Always Trust "*.ucsd.edu" when connecting to "meded-stuexchan.AD.UCSD.EDU". Click the Connect button to finish.
