MedEd Student Exchange: Instructions for Configuring Outlook 2007 (Exchange)

I. Making Outlook the default email client

1a.) If you are using Outlook 2007, click the Tools menu and select Options, and then click on the Other tab. Under the General section, check the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar. box and click OK. Close your Outlook 2007.

1b.) If you're using Outlook 2010, Click the file tab and select Options, and then click on the general section, check the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar. box and click OK. Close your Outlook 2010.

II. Setting up an Account Profile

1.) Click on the Start button, find and open the Control Panel. You will need to switch the display view of the Control Panel to Classic View mode. If it does not already appear this way, you can switch to Classic View mode by selecting the option from the panel located on the left hand side.

2.) While in Classic View mode, select and click on the Mail icon.

3.) The Mail Setup window will open. Under the Profile section, select and click on Show Profiles..., to create a profile for your Outlook/Exchange account.

4.) Click on Add to create a new Outlook profile on your computer. If an existing Outlook profile already exists, we recommend removing that profile. Older Outlook profiles can cause issues with the new MedEd Student Exchange account. Note: If you have other non-Outlook accounts setup with the older profile - such as Gmail, AT&T, SBC/Yahoo, Cox, or Time Warner, etc. then do not remove that profile. Otherwise, proceed with creating a new profile.

5.) For your new Profile Name, we recommend the name Outlook or MedEd Student Exchange for easy reference. Once you have named your profile, click OK.

III. Setting up a New Account

1.) This will open a new accounts wizard window. Check the box to Manually configure server settings or additional server types. This will gray out the other fields and allow you to click on Next to proceed.

2.) Select the radio button for Microsoft Exchange and click Next to continue.

3.) In the proceeding fields, enter the following information. We recommend checking the Use Cached Exchange Mode box, as this will allow you to read your email offline when an internet connection is not available.

  • Microsoft Exchange server: meded-stuexchan.AD.UCSD.EDU (case sensitive).
  • User Name: Input your UCSD email name (prefix of your @ucsd.edu email - truncated to eight characters).

4.) Once you have entered the Exchange server settings and your user name, click on More Settings... to configure additional features.

5.) Click on the Connection tab.

6.) Under the Outlook Anywhere section, check the box Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP and click on Exchange Proxy Settings...

7.) The Exchange Proxy Settings window will open, enter and select the following settings:

  • Note: if you are using the UCSD WebProxy with your Internet Explorer web browser, this Exchange function will not work! We recommend setting up the UCSD WebProxy on another web browser (Firefox) instead.
  • In the https:// field enter: MEDED-STUEXCHANGE.UCSD.EDU (case sensitive).
  • Check the box On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP.
  • In the Proxy Authentication Settings section, choose Basic Authentication from the drop down menu.

8.) Click OK to close the Proxy Settings window. Then click OK on the More Settings window to return to the Microsoft Exchange Settings window.

9.) Now verify your account and user name, by clicking on Check Name. This process can take a couple of minutes depending on your internet connection speed.

10.) Next, a Connecting to meded-stuexchan.AD.UCSD.EDU dialog box will appear asking for your user name and password. In the User name field, you will need to include AD along with your user name (ADusername). In the Password: field, enter your UCSD password and click OK. If you need a password, please stop by the Edcom Helpdesk during business hours.

11.) Once your credentials are accepted, the server name and user name will be underlined. Click on Next to continue and then on Finish to complete the New Accounts wizard.

12.) You are now ready to begin using Outlook 2007 with your new MedEd Student Exchange account. Click on the Outlook icon in the quick launch tray or Outlook icon on the desktop.
