Mozilla and the UCSD Web Proxy



Before you begin:

To reset your computer to its original configuration after using the Web proxy, make a note of your settings before making any of the changes detailed below.  You must have:


Begin:

  1. Start the Mozilla Web browser.
Windows: Open the Edit menu and select Preferences.
Macintosh: Open the Mozilla menu and select Preferences.

  1. In the Category menu on the left side of the window, find the Advanced disclosure triangle. Click on it to display more headings.

  2. Click on Proxies.

  3. In the Proxies window, click on  Manual proxy configuration radio dial button.

  4. In the text field, type

proxy address: webproxy.ucsd.edu

Port: 3128

The text scrolls to the right as you type.

  1. Click the Use these settings for SSL, FTP and Gopher button

  2. In No Proxy for: file, add (seperated by commas):

meded.ucsd.edu

meded-portal.ucsd.edu

meded-mail.ucsd.edu

meded-edcom.ucsd.edu

Click the OK button and quit Mozilla

 

  1. When you restart Mozilla and attempt to load a UCSD-restricted Web page, your computer will prompt you for your username and password.

  2. Enter up to the 8 eight characters of your username (even if you believe it's longer). Do not include the @ucsd.edu segment of your e-mail address.

  3. Enter your password.

  4. Click the OK button.

  5. To test your proxy settings, click this Test Link. If Mozilla is properly configured, it will bring up a 1957 article in Science by Roger Revelle.
