Remote Access - Web Proxy

There are two reasons to configure your Web browser to use the UCSD proxy/web cache:
  1. It permits UCSD clients using non-UCSD Internet Service Providers (e.g., Road Runner, AOL, COX, etc.) to access restricted Web-based services such as library e-journals. Click here for a list of restricted Web resources.
  2. It speeds Web browsing by caching (storing a local copy) frequently accessed sites.

Before you begin

You need to have access to the Internet (via dialin, DSL or cable modem) and know your UCSD Network Username and Password  (sometimes called the Student Account Username/ Password). If you do not know your Network Username or Password or if you need to make changes, please contact Network Operations or visit their web site at: http://www-no.ucsd.edu/services/netusername.html

Configuring your Web browser

Web browser configuration differs depending on your computer's operating system, type of Web browser, and type of Internet connection. Find your Web browser in the list below and follow the setup directions.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Mozilla

Opera

Safari

  • Safari 2.x for OSX 10.3+
  • If you are having issues with Safari's proxy settings it is recommened that you download Firefox for OSX and follow the configuration steps for it above

Testing your browser configuration

Click on this link to ensure your browser is set up correctly. It will bring up a 1957 article in "Science" by Roger Revelle on international cooperation in marine sciences. If it is not set correctly, you will see the citation only and a message that states: "Authorized users may be required to log in via their library website."
