MedEd IT Documentation - How to Install and Configure MacScan (Demo version)

MacScan is designed to detect, isolate and remove spyware, keystroke loggers, Trojans, and bring awareness to remote administration type applications which could have been maliciously or inadvertently installed on your Macintosh. MacScan is available for Mac OS X containing the latest definitions for spyware.



How to Install MacScan

  1. Download the Demo Version of MacScan from the http://macscan.securemac.com/.

  2. The MacScan Installer will save onto your desktop as a .dmg file, double click on the MacScan Installer icon.


  3. Once the MacScan folder opens, double click on the MacScan installer.pkg file to get started

  4. On the MacScan Welcome page click on Continue.

  5. You will be informed the program contains an installation package, click on Continue.


  6. After reading the text in the Important Information window, click on Continue.


  7. After reading the text in the Software License Agreement window, click on Continue.


  8. Next, you will be asked for a destination to install the software. We recommend the default setting, click on Install to continue.

  9. Before the installation continues, you will be asked to enter your Mac username and password, then click on OK to continue.

  10. Once the installation has succeeded, click on Close.


  11. Congratulations, you have successfully installed the Demo version of MacScan.

Note: You will need to open MacScan and adjust the default settings. Use the instructions below to change the default settings.



How to Configure MacScan

  1. Double Click on the MacScan 2 folder in your Applications, then double click on the MacScan icon.

  2. You will be asked if you would like to run MacScan in authentication mode, click No.


  3. Click on Demo.


  4. On the MacScan Status page, click on the Scheduler button.


  5. We recommend setting the MacScan Scheduler to a convenient time when your computer will be on and online. We also recommend at minimum scheduling two days per week scanning. Once you have determined a scheduling time, click on Save.

  6. From the MacScan Status page, click on the Prefs button. When the MacScan Preferences dialog box appears, make sure to check the box beside "Automatically check for program updates", then click on OK.


  7. You can now minimize MacScan by clicking on the orange button on the top left of the MacScan Status window.
