Use your Start menu to check for updates
From the Control Panel in Window XP, Windows Update can be set to download and install automatically. It can also be run manually by using the Microsoft Windows Update website. 
1. Click the Start button, the click Control Panel
2. In the Control Panel, click on Security Center
3. In the Security Center window, click on Automatic Updates, under the Manage security settings for: section
4. When the Automatic Updates dialog box appears, select the option Automatic (recommended). Choose a convenient time to download updates when your computer will be turned on. Click OK to accept the settings.
