Configuring Internet Explorer 7.xx & later for use with the UCSD Web Proxy Server

Before you begin:

Some versions of Internet Explorer are incompatible with automatic proxy configuration scripts. Be sure that you are using one of the above-listed versions of IE to access the UCSD proxy server. You can determine which version you are using by selecting About Internet Explorer from the Help pull-down menu. You can download a compatible version of IE from www.microsoft.com/downloads.

Note: if you use the UCSD WebProxy with your Internet Explorer web browser, the Outlook email client Exchange function will not work. We recommend setting up the UCSD WebProxy on another web browser instead.

Getting started:

The configuration of Internet Explorer differs slightly depending on how you connect to the Internet. If you connect to the Internet using an analog ("regular") modem over a phone line, follow the instructions under Method A. If you connect to the Internet using DSL, cable modem (such as Cox or Road Runner), or through a LAN/Ethernet (such as on campus) connection follow Method B.

Method A: If you connect to the Internet using an analog modem over a phone line or DSL (SBC)


Open Internet Explorer by either double-clicking on the IE icon on your desktop or by going to Start -> Programs -> Internet Explorer. From the Tools pull-down menu select Internet Options. Click on the Connections tab. Click on the icon for dialin service you use in the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings box. Click the Settings... button. NOTE: Write down, or save to a text file, all information found on this page so that, if needed, you can reset your proxy setting to their original configuration after you are done using the campus proxy. You may need to scroll to the right in the configuration URL textbox to get ALL the information.
	Check the box next to Use a proxy server for this connection. Type the following address in the Address and port fields: webproxy.ucsd.edu 3128 Check the box next to Bypass proxy server for local addresses Click the OK button. Click the Advanced... button and add the following sites: .ucsd.edu meded-.ucsd.edu Click the Apply and/or the OK button on the next screen. Restart Internet Explorer. Please note that the box next to Automatically detect settings* should* not be checked.
Congratulations! You have successfully configured your web browser for use with the UCSD proxy server using a phone line. You can now skip to the Using the UCSD Proxy Server section of this document for further instructions.

Method B: If you connect to the Internet using cable modem, or through a LAN/Ethernet connection

Open Internet Explorer by either double-clicking on the IE icon on your desktop or by going to Start -> Programs -> Internet Explorer. From the Tools pull-down menu select Internet Options. Click on the Connections tab. Click the Lan Settings... button. NOTE: Write down, or save to a text file, all information found on this page so that, if needed, you can reset your proxy setting to their original configuration after you are done using the campus proxy. You may need to scroll to the right in the configuration URL textbox to get ALL the information.
	Check the box next to Use automatic configuration script. Type the following address in the Address field: http://webproxy.ucsd.edu/proxy.pl Click the Apply and/or the OK button on the next screen. Restart Internet Explorer.
Congratulations! You have successfully configured your web browser for use with the UCSD proxy server using DSL, a cable modem, or LAN/Ethernet. You can now skip to the Using the UCSD Proxy Server section of this document for further instructions.

Using the UCSD Proxy Server: After configuring your web browser using the instructions given above, close and quit your web browser. You may then launch your web browser and access web pages as you normally would. The first time you attempt to access a UCSD-restricted web site during your web browsing session, your computer will prompt you for your UCSD network username and password: To test that you have set up your browser correctly, click on this Test Link. When used with a properly configured proxy implementation, this link will bring up a 1957 article in "Science" by Roger Revelle on international cooperation in marine sciences.
	In the field labeled User Name: type your username (do not add the @ucsd.edu segment of your e-mail address; only first eight characters if your username is long). In the field labeled Password: type your password. Click the OK button. You should then be able to access all available UCSD-restricted websites.
