Web Proxy Overview

The "Web Proxy" is a service provided and managed by the main Campus IT. To help configure your computer, please continue below.

The Web Proxy (sometimes called "web caching")  is a way to access the library databases and electronic journals from off campus.  By configuring your web browser to use the UCSD proxy:

  1.  UCSD affiliates using non-UCSD Internet Service Providers (e.g., Road Runner, AT&T, COX, AOL, etc.) are permitted access across the campus firewall to restricted Web-based services such as library e-journals. Click here for a list of restricted Web resources.

  2. The process of "caching" (storing a local copy) of frequently accessed sites will speed up your web browsing.

 3.   You may also use UCSD's Virtual Private Network connection in lieu of the Web Proxy to access restricted materials. The proxy may be discontinued in the near future.

Before you begin

You need to have access to the Internet and know your AD Username and Password. If you have trouble logging in after setup, you may need to reset your password.

Configuring your Web browser

The proxy server set up process depends on your computer's operating system and type of Web browser. Find your Web browser in the list below and follow the setup directions. We recommend having two browsers on your computer; one for everyday browsing and one specifically for proxy use. This eliminates the process of turning on/off the proxy each time you use it.

Chrome

Mozilla Firefox (Preferred)

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Opera

Safari

  • Safari (Mac OSX)
  • Safari (Windows)
  • If you are having issues with Safari's proxy settings, it is recommended that you download Firefox and follow the steps for it above.

Testing your browser configuration

Click on this link External Site / New Window to ensure your browser is set up correctly. It will bring up a 1957 article in "Science" by Roger Revelle on international cooperation in marine sciences. If it is not set correctly, you will see the citation only and a message that states: "Authorized users may be required to log in via their library website."
