ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDS TRAINING AT UC SAN DIEGO
INCOMING INTERNS, RESIDENTS, AND FELLOWS
Dear Doctors:
Here at UC San Diego Medical Center, the vast majority of our clinical areas are served by one of several electronic medical records (EMRs). I am writing to you to inform you of our strategy for familiarizing you with our systems as you join our institution.
The Medical Center inpatient setting uses an EMR called PCIS, which is a Siemens Invision product. PCIS includes results, nursing documentation, and computerized order entry; physician documentation remains on paper.
The Medical Center ambulatory clinics and the Moores Cancer Center use the Epic Ambulatory EMR.
The affiliated VA Medical Center in San Diego uses their CPRS EMR.
In December of 2010, the inpatient PCIS system will be retired, and we will transition inpatient care to the Epic Inpatient system. In fact, we will be launching a portion of the Epic Inpatient application in May 2010, which will support medication reconciliation, discharge instructions, discharge prescribing, post-discharge orders, and direct-entry discharge summaries.
We are asking all incoming trainees to review two short online modules prior to arriving at UC San Diego in order to have some familiarity with the systems. Incoming interns will undergo additional hands-on training in both the PCIS and Epic EMRs during their orientation week; residents and fellows may undergo additional hands-on training at the discretion of the supervising departments.
Please make every effort to review these modules prior to your orientation; it will greatly facilitate your ability to use both systems. Thank you.
