Mission
Statement
HI-Med
is founded on the belief that life and healing
are inherently holistic processes, and incorporating
this belief into the practice of medicine can
provide positive and transformative change in
our patients' lives as well as the culture at
large. By holistic we mean taking into account
the whole spectrum of human experience, from body
to mind to emotion and spirit. By integrative
we mean integrating the focus on physical mechanisms
of health and disease with the importance of individual
intention and psychological and energetic considerations.
The central theme of HI-Med is the age-old proverb
“physician, heal thyself:” We are
a group dedicated to developing ourselves as healers
while being concurrently trained as sophisticated
biomedical technicians.
People
experience illness as affecting not only their
physical body but also their emotions and energy,
their awareness, and overall sense of well-being.
Physicians may choose to participate in the healing
of a patient at one or all of these levels. We
believe that both parties benefit from a unified
approach to wellness, and that the facilitation
of holistic healing is a learnable skill. Above
all, we seek to stimulate the innate interest
of medical culture and by extension, cultural
consciousness, in holistic well-being. Moreover,
we seek to catalyze the UCSD and surrounding community
to embrace holism, the unity of mind-body-spirit
for the purpose of healing, and in this way cultivate
a healing community based upon respect and love
for each patient.
Fundamentally,
HI-Med seeks to play an active role in bringing
about a transformation in the culture of medicine
and medical education towards one that fosters
holistic wellness and serves to transform our
society in the directions of greater awareness,
balance, and well-being. A primary means by which
we seek to do this is through the development
of ourselves as physician-healers schooled in
diverse mind/body/spirit world-views and the importance
of mind-body interactions and other techniques
useful in the stimulation of the body’s
natural affinity for balance. An additional important
adjunct to this is our role as a community of
people with a strong collective intention for
this kind of transformation in the world.
