Program Requirements
This program is designed for high school seniors who are California residents considering careers in medicine. Application to this program is by invitation only, following regular undergraduate application to UCSD. To be eligible for the program, you must first complete and submit the undergraduate application. Invitations will then be sent to all applicants who meet the follow criteria:
High School Level
- 4.0 or higher high school GPA and SAT > 2250 or ACT > 34.
Brochures are sent to all students who meet GPA and SAT/ACT criteria.
- A demonstration of strong extracurricular involvement, particularly in community service and leadership.
- Two letters of recommendation, one from a science teacher and the other from a humanities/social sciences teacher.
- An essay limited to 400 words, describing their background and how their interest and motivation for a career in medicine developed.
- Interviews by medical school faculty and senior medical students.
College Level
- Maintain an overall 3.5 GPA or higher, and not less than 3.5 overall GPA in upper division courses, in both sciences and humanities/social sciences.
- Any major is acceptable.
- The student must fulfill the usual premedical requirements: two years of chemistry (one full year must be organic chemistry), one year of biology, one year of physics, and one year of college level calculus, statistics or computer science.
- Enrollment in a minimum of 6 quarters of humanities/social science courses, with emphasis on literature and composition.
- Medical scholars must continue to demonstrate integrity and character traits necessary for the practice of medicine.
