Healthy Student Programs
Toward Social, Cultural, Physical and Emotional Wellness
The goal of the Healthy Student Program is to assist our students in finding and maintaining a balance, not only during medical school, but in the years beyond as a physician. We believe that optimal learning and medical training occurs in the context of sound personal health and an engaging community.
Toward that end, the School of Medicine offers the following workshops and informal sessions throughout the academic year.
Staying Mentally Healthy
Strategies for coping optimally with stress, preventing depression. anxiety and burnout, on time management, and the prevention of substance abuse are offered. Sessions on how to develop and maintain relationships with colleagues, partners and parents during medical school will be offered. Through support groups and workshops, students will receive guidance on how to achieve individual goals.
Additionally a number of student groups offer activities such as yoga, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, training on peer counseling, active listening, and resources within the UCSD community that can be tapped into to support each other best as a community.
The Healthy Student Program also focuses on the importance of exercise. Planned walks, runs, soccer and salsa dancing take place frequently. Intramural sports are very active within the medical school and student groups organize various activities, such as tennis, surf clinics, volleyball, and rollerskating, taking advantage of the beautiful San Diego area.
