"I want to make a couple of important points:
  • When doing the initial workup on a patient with asthma it is important to get pulmonary function tests. This will help you determine the extent of disease.
  • A chest radiograph might be helpful if you need to exclude other diagnoses but it is not a routine test.
  • Allergy testing is not routinely done. It can be useful in patients with asthma which is refractory to treatment.
  • Lab tests like CBCs and chemistries are not routinely done on asthma patients."
