General Asthma Questions

Question 1.

Which of the following is NOT a component of asthma:

  1. Airway Edema
  2. Pulmonary Edema
  3. Acute Bronchoconstriction
  4. Chronic Mucus Plug Formation

Pulmonary edema is not a component of asthma. Acute Bronchoconstriction can be a result of IgE dependant release of mediators from mast cells. Bronchoconstriction can also be caused by aspirin, NSAIDS, exercise, cold air, irritants and stress. Airway edema occurs as a result of increased microvascular permeability secondary to release of inflammatory mediators. Mucus plug formation also occurs in asthma.
