General Asthma Questions

Question 2.

All of the following are true about asthma EXCEPT:

  1. Child-Onset asthma tends to be associated with atopy (the genetic susceptibility to produce IgE directed towards common household allergens)
  2. Adult-onset asthma is always nonallergic asthma.
  3. The same medications can be used to treat child and adult-onset asthma.
  4. Occupational exposure to materials can cause asthma in some patients.

Adult-onset asthma may or may not be associated with allergies. In adults, nonallergic (intrinsic) asthma is often associated with sinusitis, nasal polyps and sensitivity to aspirin or NSAIDS. Occupational asthma can occur as a result of exposure to materials like biological enzymes, wood dusts, plastic resins, and metals. All three types of asthma are treated with similar medications.
