Oral Cholecystogram

The oral cholecystogram is used to visualize the gallbladder. The patient ingests pills, the contrast is conjugated in the liver and concentrated in the gallbladder. This study demonstrates one round gallstone present within the contrast-filled gallbladder. The gallbladder must be examined in various projections to be sure that the stone is within the gallbladder and does not represent an artifact due to superimposition of a gas-filled segment of colon on top of the gallbladder. This stone is round because there are no other stones in the gallbladder. This is also a radiolucent stone that could not be seen on a plain radiograph.
