The Tc-99m HIDA scan demonstrates findings typical of cystic duct obstruction, e.g., there is uptake of Tc-99m HIDA in the liver and excretion into the intra- and extrahepatic biliary system as well as into the proximal small bowel. The gallbladder, however, is not visualized because of the obstructed cystic duct. This test is typically not required in most cases of acute cholecystitis. However, this study can be useful in cases where the diagnosis is in question and the ultrasound does not confirm the diagnosis.
