A: Stratified squamous epithelium is well adapted to withstand abrasion since loss of surface cells protects the underlying tissue. Unlike keratinized epithelium on the skin, non-keratinized epithelium is not adapted against desiccation. Therefore, non-keratinized epithelium is found on moist mucus membranes (ex. oral cavity, esophagus, cervix, and vagina.)
