Welcome to the Professional Development Center

Welcome to the Professional Development Center at the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine,home of the Standardized Patient Program (SPP). The director of the PDC is Dr. Peggy Wallace, the author of "Coaching Standardized Patients for Use in the Assessment of Clinical Competence".

The Standardized Patient Program is:
  • an educational resource that provides clinical skills teaching and assessment opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education
  • composed of people called Standardized Patients (SPs) who are specially trained to accurately portray real patients
The goals of the Standardized Patient Program are:
  • to promote proficiency in communication, history taking, and physical exam skills for medical students, residents, and health care professionals
  • to deliver the highest quality of SPs to serve medical education
