Application Letter for Visiting Senior Students from US, Canadian, and Puerto Rican Schools

Eligibility

Students must have completed their core clerkship training:
Medicine: 12 weeks
Surgery: 12 weeks
OB / GYN: 6 weeks
Pediatrics: 8 weeks
Psychiatry: 6 weeks
Neurology: 4 weeks

(ONLY Neuro can be waived, which precludes application for a Neuro clerkship.)

UCSD recognizes that all medical schools do not have identical core clerkship (weeks) requirements; each application is reviewed and evaluated with this in mind. Students must be in good academic standing with their school, must be seniors, and must receive academic credit from their school for electives taken at UCSD.

Application Timetable

Summer quarter is reserved for UCSD students.

The Visiting Student Program begins in the Fall quarter (9/21/2009).

Applications for clerkships beginning the September 21st block will be acceped after 7/1/2009 and processed first, followed by Winter and Spring quarter application requests.

Students are subject to the calendar listed on the bulletin; other schedules will not be considered.

I am unable to take calls checking on an application's status.
I will happily acknowledge receipt of application material.
Please send your inquiry to me via e-mail.

Only completed applications with ALL MATERIAL included in ONE MAILING/envelope will be processed.
Turn-around time for assignment is 4-8 weeks.

Health Insurance & Immunizations

Students are required to provide proof of health insurance coverage.

Students must provide proof of a negative TB skin test or negative chest x-ray report taken within the 12 months prior to the actual electives dates.

Additionally, proof-of-immunity to rubeola, mumps and rubella is a requirement. It is suggested that you be vaccinated against Hepatitis B and have immunity to polio and tetanus, although this is not mandatory.

Application Procedure

Student completes all items in Section I of UCSD SOM application.

It is important to allow some flexibility by listing alternate choices, should your first choice be full.

Students may apply for one (4 weeks) or two (8 weeks) electives.

Section II is to be completed by your Dean or school official, with your school seal affixed, and the hard-copy (original form) must be mailed with all other material, one mailing.

Additional Requirement

  •  Send a copy of your core clerkship evaluation (from clerkship closest to your request) — must have "comments" stating:
  1. student's fund-of-knowledge
  2.  physical exam skills
  3.  ability to relate to peers / patients
  4.  note-taking
  5.  level-of-skills
  6.  etc.
  • This requirement is in addition to the standard form letter from your school, "student-in-good-standing," routinely sent by your Student Affairs office.
  •   Medical School Transcript (may be unofficial copy)
  •  USMLE step1 score (may be unofficial copy). No other exams will be accepted.

Please note: If it is not possible to send a core clerkship evaluation (due to your school’s policy), submit a letter containing the same information covered in core clerkship evaluations, signed by a faculty member who worked with you.

It is important that all material be kept together in one mailing.

Application Fee

There is an application fee of $125.00/per 4-week elective, payable to UC Regents.

Please leave date field on check blank.  It will be completed by the coordinator when an elective assignment is made.

Include the application fee when sending in your material.

Once an elective has been offered, the application fee is nonrefundable.
