South Bay Region   |  Central Region

The overall goal of the Healthy Youth Healthy Futures Program (HYHF) at the San Diego Border AHEC – Central Region is to provide the youth participants with knowledge and awareness on the multitude and diversity of health careers.

HYHF is a school in-health careers program that offers practical hands-on experiences through a variety of fun and educational activities. These "real-life" practical experiences offer youth the opportunity to experience the medical environment and introduce them to the wide range health careers available to them.

The HYHF program serves the Crawford Health and Medical Practices School (CHAMPs), Hamilton Elementary School, The Sports Academy – a Juvenile Court Community School (JCCS), Rosa Parks Elementary School and all other Central Region youth. Last year, the HYHF program served over 2500 youth with various activities including presentations given by health professionals in the classroom, hospital tours, health educational summer camps, surgery viewings, and health career guidance.

  • Camp Scripps.   Introduces young students to health careers and duties performed by professionals in various medical fields. Camp activities include a tour of a community health clinic, hands-on activities involving health care, speakers on health-related issues and a visit to a fire station to learn about first responders.

  • Health Professions Overview 101.   Students from local schools tour the hospital and spend time in clinical departments to learn about a variety of health care professions.

  • Health Professionals in the Classroom.   Medical residents or other health care professionals enlighten students on healthcare careers through engaging presentations.

  • Surgery Viewing.   Students who are interested in surgical medicine can meet surgeons and other operating room staff members and observe an actual orthopedic surgery.

The HYHF program attributes its success to the collaboration of the health professionals of San Diego community and is appreciative of all time given to help the youth. If you are a health professional and would like to volunteer your time and participate in developing the health professionals of the future, please contact project coordinator Florence Clark for more information on how you can become involved at (619) 321-2925 or via email at  clark.florence@scrippshealth.org

Here is what one of the students had to say about her experience participating in HYHF, "HYHF helped to inspire me in pursuing higher education in health field. This is because I am learning more about the ways of maintaining myself and how to stay healthy. I really enjoy these different health presentations and health professions exposure. I also enjoy our field trips. This is teaching me more about the health field." Leticia Contreras.
