At higher power, the epithelium is shown to be stratified. At left, the outermost cells are almost squamous, while at center the outermost cells are "dome-shaped." The epithelium is termed transitional because the shape of these cells transitions between squamous to dome-shaped depending on the degree of stretch they are exposed to (i.e. whether the bladder is full or empty). |
