A high-power image of the cartilage in the center of the preceding image reveals chondrocytes and lacunae.  The matrix contains collagen fibers and the lacunae and chondrocytes are smaller and less plump than those of either hyaline or elastic cartilage.  Also, perichondrium is not present as this type of cartilage develops in association with hyaline cartilage.
