In this high-magnification view of an area similar to the inset in the previous image, the basal stratum germinativum is shown resting on the papillary layer of the dermis.  Above are the cells of the stratum spinosum that show faint ‘spines’ in the intercellular regions.  These ‘spines’ result from shrinkage artifact in cells held together by numerous desmosomes.
