A very low-power survey image of the duodenum shows the organization of the wall of the upper small intestine.  Note that the mucosa  and submucosa are thrown into folds (plicae circulares) that help amplify surface area for absorption.  The muscularis propria can be seen as an eosinophilic band beneath the paler-staining submucosa.
