A high-power view of thyroid follicles shows the epithelial cells whose height varies from low cuboidal in an inactive gland to columnar in an active gland. The follicular epithelium synthesizes thyroid hormones, T3 and T4, which are stored extracellularly in the colloid. Though not seen in routine preparations, C or parafollicular cells are also present and produce calcitonin. |
