high-power image, the epithelium of the seminiferous tubule is shown.
The epithelium is composed of two populations of cells: Sertoli
and spermatogenic cells. Sertoli
cells have oval nuclei with prominent nucleoli and are found just
above the spermatogonia that rest on the basement membrane.
These cells provide support, nutrition and protection to
spermatogenic cells. Spermatogenic
cells regularly replicate and differentiate from spermatogonia into
sperm and are found at all levels in this epithelium. |
