Short term research training program
The short term research training program is intended to provide an introductory research experience for UC San Diego students during the summer between their first and second year of medical school. First year medical students receive an orientation to the program in fall quarter. A description of the application requirements is made available at that time.
Students submit their proposals and other related forms online during the application period, which typically begins sometime in February and ends in late March. All submissions will be reviewed by the Short Term Research Training Executive Review Committee. Each April, the Review Committee meets to select the proposals to be funded for the upcoming summer.
The short term research training program begins in early June and ends in early September. A stipend (approximately $1,900 per month) is provided to the student, and financial support is also available for travel to scientific meetings if the work is accepted for presentation.
The short term research training program is funded through both extramural and institutional sources. The extramural sources currently include the short term CTRI TL1 training grant and the UAB-UCSD O'Brien Core Center for Acute Kidney Injury Research. All funding mechanisms utilize the same application forms and the online submission process as described below.
The short term research training program may serve as a point of entry for students to participate in more extensive research experiences. Such experiences might include participation in the yearlong NIH Medical Research Scholars Program or the HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program. Alternatively, students may decide to pursue further education and training in clinical research through the Master of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research at UC San Diego.
