Instructions for Students Wishing to Pursue Educational Experiences in Other Countries
If you intend to pursue elective clinical experiences and/or your ISP overseas under UCSD School of Medicine sponsorship, please observe the following guidelines:
Identify a contact person at the host institution/organization overseas and obtain in writing that individual's
a. approval of your proposal
b. written agreement to serve as your supervisor
c. agreement to provide a written evaluation of your work on a form provided by UCSD
d. willingness to serve as your host
Present your proposed plan of study/work to your advisor for approval and agreement to act as your sponsor (your UCSD advisor acts as your UCSD Faculty Sponsor). This person shall sign on (c) under Approvals on the Extramural International Elective Form.
Note: If your advisor is from a discipline/field other than the one in which you intend to pursue the overseas elective, then you must also obtain written approval from a UCSD School of Medicine Faculty Member in the discipline in which you intend to pursue your studies. This person shall sign on (a) under Approvals on the Extramural International Elective Form. In this case you need both (a) and (c) UCSD Faculty signatures.
Complete the Extramural International Elective Form (the blue form) available from UGME and obtain the remaining required signatures.
- Make your plans as early as possible. Read through the guidelines under Travel Clinic, Passports, What to pack, etc. in this website.
