ISP Handbook

What is the Role of the ISP Chair?

The chair has the primary responsibility for guiding the student in anticipating problems and finding solutions. The chair also must insure that the administrative details are met:

  1. The ISP proposal must be approved by the Electives Committee before the work is performed.
  2. The student may not enroll in fourth year courses until the ISP proposal and all accompanying forms have been submitted to the UGME office.  The deadline is May 1st of the student’s third year.
  3. Students may use up to 2 elective months during their fourth year to work on their ISP.  Academic credit for this time is received by submitting an add card with the ISP chair's signature.  If more time is needed, the student must submit a request to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education.
  4. The ISP proposal must be completed and approved by the ISP committee and the Electives Committee by December 1 of the student's senior year.  Failure to meet this deadline will prevent further enrollment in fourth year courses.
  5. The ISP must be completed and presented to the ISP committee by March 1 of the student's senior year.  It must be approved in final form by each member of the ISP committee and submitted to the UGME office by April 1.  Failure to meet this deadline will result in failure of the student to participate in graduation exercises.
  6. It is the responsibility of the Chair to nominate a project for any of the research awards available to students in the School of Medicine.
