Core Topics in Biomedical Sciences (SOMI 220)

Sample Schedule:

Classes are held each weekday morning from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m, with occasional sessions in the early afternoon (including one anatomy and histology lab weekly). During morning sessions, Core Topics instructors present advanced concepts related directly to the first-year curriculum, including topics in cardiovascular physiology and anatomy, physiology and pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system, immunology, and molecular biology (see schedule from 2016).   Concepts are presented predominantly through lectures but also via active learning through case studies, problem-solving sessions, team-based learning sessions, and the presentation of patients by clinical faculty. Afternoon sessions are devoted to anatomy and histology laboratories (one each week), exam review, and orientation sessions.  In the laboratory sessions, students also will have the opportunity to learn basic clinical skills such as auscultation of heart sounds. In addition, the course faculty are available for discussion and review in office hours outside of scheduled class time. The instructors assess student learning informally during in-class problem-solving and team-based learning sessions and formally via multiple-choice examinations administered approximately once each week .
