Welcome to the Professional Development Center

Welcome to the Professional Development Center (PDC) at the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine, home of the Standardized Patient Program. The director of the PDC is Dr. Peggy Wallace, author of "Coaching Standardized Patients for Use in the Assessment of Clinical Competence".

The Goal of the Standardized Patient Program is to provide realistic practice opportunities in a simulated environment where it is safe to make mistakes and learn from them before working independently with real patients.

The Standardized Patient Program is:

·  Comprised of individuals referred to as Standardized or Simulated Patients (SPs) who are specially trained to accurately and authentically portray actual patients.

·  An educational resource providing opportunities for clinical skills learning and assessment across the spectrum of undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education.
