Dr. Mandel joined the UCSD School of Medicine as Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Medicine in July 2006.  He earned his A.B. at Brown University and his M.D. at Baylor College of Medicine.  He completed his Internal Medicine residency and chief residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston and his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital.  He joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School in 1997 and moved to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2001, where he served as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Curriculum and directed Iowa's Pulmonary Hypertension Program.  He has an extensive background in medical student counseling, mentoring, and both preclinical and clinical teaching.
