Dr. Whitehead was appointed as Interim Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, effective October 1, 2017.

Dr. Whitehead is a Professor in the UCSD Department of Surgery, Division of Anatomy.  His primary research interest is in neuroplasticity (how the brain recovers from injury), specifically how taste information is processed by the central nervous system.  Dr. Whitehead has been chief of the Anatomy Division in the Department of Surgery since 1994.   He has chaired  the Core Curriculum Committee  and  the Committee on Educational Policy (CEP) and been an active  member of Health Sciences Faculty Council, the Basic Science Curriculum Review Committee, and the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP). He also plays a leadership role on UC San Diego’s Human Anatomical Specimen and Tissue Oversight Committee.  Dr. Whitehead holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience (Anatomy) from the University of Rochester.

Dr. Whitehead has been a faculty leader in Medical Education for many years. In addition to serving as Director of the critical Anatomy Thread, Dr. Whitehead is Director of two pre-clinical courses, “Musculoskeletal System” and “Arthritis, Rheumatology, and Dermatology Disorders.” He also lectures in other courses and has served as a facilitator for student small group sessions.  Dr. Whitehead was named “Outstanding Educator” by the UCSD School of Medicine students in 2008 and received the Kaiser Permanente Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2011.
