Office of the Associate Dean for Physician-Scientist Training UCSD

Recommendations Arising From Discussions with
UCSD Faculty & Medical Students

  • Admissions policies that ensure intake of more students who are likely to become Physician-Scientist trainees.
  • Encourage and support entry of undifferentiated medical students into PhD and/or other dual degree programs.
  • Encourage and support entry of postgraduate medical trainees into research-intensive experiences.
  • Enhance the critical mass of Physician-Scientist trainees at the UCSD SOM and their interactions with one another.
  • Enhance exposure of trainees to established Physician-Scientist role models at UCSD SOM.
  • Pursue all possible funding mechanisms to support Physician-Scientist training and to reduce Physician-Scientist trainee debt burden (Federal, philanthropy, foundations, industry & UC system).
  • Have discussions with PhD graduate programs about how to optimize double-degree tracks.
  • Find philanthropic and governmental support for scholarships to support 3rd- and 4th-year of medical school for students who undertake a PhD.
  • Take advantage of potential local "Feeder" programs, such as NIH Summer Research Training Program.
  • Modify ISP process to increase interest in research.
  • Interactions with NIH to find new sources of funding.
  • Take advantage of existing national programs, such as the HHMI and Doris Duke "One-year-out" grant systems. Consider the UCSD Undergraduate Medical Scholars Program as a potential "farm team" for future trainees.
