Pilot Research
Dr. Araneta's Pilot project examined the relationship between adipocytokines and
coronary heart disease among African-American women and Filipina women. The
relationship between adipocytokines and CHD has not yet been evaluated among
African-American women. Her study analyzed previously collected data to determine
whether ethnic differences in subclinical atherosclerosis are explained by
differences in adipocytokine levels, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or other
cardiovascular risk factors among African-American, Caucasian and Filipino women.
The aims of this study were to conduct statistical analyses of using previously
collected data to determine if:
- EBCT-defined subclinical atherosclerosis differs among post-menopausal
African-American, Filipino-American and Caucasian women.
- Ethnic differences in subclinical atherosclerosis are explained by
differences in adipocytokine concentration, type 2 diabetes, the
metabolic syndrome and its components, of other CVD risk factors,
including smoking, LDL cholesterol levels, and physical inactivity.
- The relationship between adipocytokines and CVD risk factors, including type
2 diabetes, the components of the metabolic syndrome, and
CT-defined visceral adiposity differ by ethnicity.
This study is currently performing data analysis.
